On January 25th I was fortunate to attended the Sekai Ishin Ryu Ju Jitsu Renmei 30th year Anniversary Ball in Lynford Hall Norfolk with  Uchideshi Sean Hughes & Phil Roberts Senseis.

Soke Kevin Pell had requested my presence  at the anniversary and I had no idea why, but it all became apparent quickly enough, little did I know, Sean Hughes had been in touch with Soke Pell for the past two years and it was only when sitting down relaxing, enjoying the amazing Kodo drummers and watching the awards I thought it was odd that Soke began to read a piece which sounded like my martial arts CV to the room.

I can honestly say I didn’t know weather to laugh or cry, fair to say I was in a state of shock. It was then Soke asked me to join him at the front of the room as there was something he wanted to present me.

All of a sudden it become surreal, I made my way to the front of the room, in the presence of so many highly respected and renown martial artists, I was shaking and at this point still unaware what was going on, I could not fathom what Soke wished to present me with, it was then he announced to the room that he wished to award me the title of Shihan and presented me with a beautiful certificate specially designed for the occasion

Time stopped at this point, I felt the room quieten in my head, my emotions began to rise, I was overwhelmed, tearful and lost for words. It was then I come around to my senses to the overwhelming applause and ovation from those in the room.

So I must, with deepest gratitude, honour and thanks to Soke Kevin Pell and Ishin Ryu Yudansha for the presentation of Shihan.

This is a significant honour given that Soke Pell has not bestowed this upon anyone outside his organisation before now.

I am truly humbled and I am still in shock. I find myself looking at the award and I feel a sense of pride and honour. This award means so much more than a title and for it to be requested from my students fills me with utter determination to continue my journey within Jujitsu, building links within our community and strengthening our art through friendship and hard training. the warmth, friendliness and brotherhood received was fantastic and I will look forward to a prosperous year ahead working in budo friendship with Ishin Ryu.

And finally, to all of my students at the Honbu. All of my instructors who work to solidify our beliefs and syllabus, this belongs to us all. We are Muga Mushin Ryu Ju Jitsu and we WILL continue to move forward. Thank you all.
